Second Grade

Course Description

Posts

Hello!

Dear Room 9 Families,

There is a lot going on in second grade right now!

We are finishing up our unit on Telling Time in math, and will begin looking at Measurement next!

In Science, we finished our unit on Erosion and are starting a unit on Government in Social Studies.

Our writing focus this trimester is Opinion writing and we continue to work on reading strategies in small groups.

We are finished reverse engineering small electronics and will begin our next phase: re-engineering tomorrow morning (Thank you fearless parent helpers!!).

I would like to start a project using natural materials, so if you could send any of the following as you find them on walks or in your yard, that would be helpful:
  • small sticks
  • small stones
  • leaves
  • seed pods
  • moss
  • bark
Also, a yellow flyer with an envelope attached was sent home last week.  PTA is requesting a donation of $20 for the Open House Auction coming in May.  If you can't find the flyer, let me know, I can send one home with your child.

Thank you!
Mrs. Chase

Art and Photos

Hi Room 9 Families!

We will have Spring Photos taken tomorrow before recess.  We also have art in the afternoon.  So... if your child is wearing an outfit that cannot get paint on it, please send a change of clothes or a big t-shirt to pull over their outfit for the art class.

Thank you!
Mrs. Chase

Best Part of Me

Hi Room 9 Families!

Mrs. Liu, who worked extremely hard to put together the Best Part of Me book for our class was able to order the books yesterday since the company was running a 40% off sale.

If you ordered a hard cover book, the total cost including shipping and tax comes to $27.  Soft cover books are $17. Please send cash in the exact amount in an envelope with "Best Part of Me" and your child's name written on the envelope.

We start Reverse Engineering today in our class.  Students are using real tools to take apart small typing devices and study how the components work.  They will be documenting their efforts and making a slide show presentation for you to see at open house.  Thank you to the parents who are volunteering to help us with this hands-on project!  It would not be possible without you!

In Design-Based Learning, students completed a design challenge to solve their overcrowding issues in the Never-Before-Seen Creature City.  Students then voted to create mixed use spaces and our lead engineer: Yu Xin built a second story to accommodate all of their creature's needs.  We then held a design challenge to organize our classroom.  Allyson, Elizabeth, and Gianna won that design challenge, and moved our furniture to match their design.

Happy Wednesday!
Mrs. Chase

What's Going On?

Hi Room 9 Families!

There is a lot going on in second grade right now!

Here's and overview:
In math we are looking at 3 - digit subtraction with regrouping.  We'll have a test next week to show what we know!

In science, we are studying states of matter, and had an experiment with butter, buttons, and ice.  Ask your child about what he/she observed.

In social studies, our focus is on people who make/made a difference.  Students are writing e-books about a person of their choosing.

We have started coding in the computer lab using code.org after seeing an assembly on robots!

Reading and writing are focused on non-fiction books.  Please note that this week's homework is due on Monday to give students more time since they are not coming to school on Friday.

Exciting news!! JPL is taking reservations for this summer's open house.  Mrs. Dizon sent us the link: https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/events/special-events.php  Thanks, Mrs. Dizon!!

Finally, I will be submitting the orders for the 'Best Part of Me' books on Friday, so if you are interested in ordering one, please let me know as soon as possible!

Happy Wednesday!

Holiday Show!!

Hi Room 9 Families!

The holiday show is tomorrow, Thursday December 14th at 9am and 1pm.  The am show will be the dress rehearsal with the upper grade student sin the audience plus any parents that would like to attend, so it will be a bit crowded.  The 1 pm show is for families only, so your chances of getting a chair are better.

Please encourage your child to wear holiday or Wilson wear.

We are accepting donations for families who are struggling this holiday season.  The donations will go to La Casa de San Gabriel Community Center and distributed to local families.  They have asked for donations of:
  • Toothpaste
  • Toothbrushes
  • Shampoo
  • Deodorant
  • Lotion
  • Soap/Body Wash
If you are able to make a donation, please put it in the red box in the cafeteria.

Also, a flyer went home today regarding our Winter Party!  Please send your $5 donation for the party with your child by this Friday.  Our room parents are handling all of the shopping!!  Thank you room parents!

If you can donate craft items for our project, they can be brought in next week.

Thank you!
Mrs. Chase

Report Cards

Hi Room 9 Families!

Report cards went home today.  We work very hard to ensure that everything is correct, but sometimes make a mistake, so if you have a question about the report card, please email me right away.

I hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving Break!  This year is going very quickly!!  The winter program will be on December 14th at 9am and 1pm.  You are welcome to come at either time, but the afternoon will be less crowded since the upper grade students will be attending the 9am performance.

We are starting informational writing, finding evidence in text in reading, maps and land use in social studies, and place value in math.  Our PE focus is on basketball.  Visual and performing arts will be focused on music and singing for the winter program and winter collages.

Take care!
Mrs. Chase

A giant THANK YOU to the parents who went on the Field Trip!!!  It was such a beautiful day and the students came back very excited and curious!

Also, we have another assembly on Wednesday, so we will not have time to go to the garden this week.  If you are able to, please stop by and water our plants.

Field Trip!!!

Hi everyone!!

We're going on our field trip tomorrow, November 2nd.

We'll be going to the Huntington Library and Gardens.

A few reminders:

  • Please do not send any money.
  • If possible, have your child wear a Wilson or red shirt.
  • Bring a lunch in a bag that can be thrown away.  We do not have a place to keep reusable containers/water bottles.
  • We will be outside, so dress accordingly.  (Please make sure your child can tie their sweater/sweatshirt around their waist, so it doesn't get left behind.)
  • Send a healthy snack your child can eat before we get on the bus.
  • Only invited chaperone parents may join us - all volunteers must be cleared through the office, and we have a limited number of parents who may join us due to the Huntington's policies.
  • We will have iPads for students to take photos, so please do not send a camera.
Thank you!

We are having our addition regrouping test in Math tomorrow or Thursday, depending on our busy schedule, and will have the House on... test on Thursday.

I giant THANK YOU to our garden helpers that come each week!  If you'd like to join them to help out, we take small groups to the garden from 8:45 - 10am on Wednesdays.

Hello!

Hi Room 9 Families,

It was so nice meeting with everyone this week and discussing your children's progress!

Wilson had a PTA meeting on Tuesday, and they asked us to send out reminders for a couple of events:

1.  We need more trunks for Trunk or Treat.  If you are interested, please let the office know, and they can give you the flyer.  When my son was at Wilson, we went every year.  It is a safe, fun way for your children to trick or treat with all of their friends.  Or, you can use it as a starting point, and trick or treat with all of your Wilson buddies afterward!

2.  They also need candy donations for the participating cars.  You can bring candy  to the office, or give it to your child and we'll send it down for you.

3.  PTA Memberships are due.  These funds help our PTA bring programs to the school.  This is not a commitment of your time.  If you need another form, please let me know.

4.  If you are interested in being more involved, the Auction Team is looking for additional members to help out.  Let me know and I'll put you in contact with the team.

Thank you for all you do!

News!

Hi Room 9 Families!

We are currently working on one of my favorite units in social studies: How San Gabriel has changed over time!  We have looked at native plants and animals, and studied the Tongva (Native Americans of this region).  Next we look at the Spanish Missionaries.

We have a math test on Thursday focused on repeated addition and arrays.  A second practice test went home today.

In Language Arts, we are focusing on growing our vocabulary and studying how animals can be our friends.

Our first school garden day is tomorrow, a big thank you to our volunteers who will be helping out tomorrow!!

Our room parent, Kara, shared this website with us, it looks like a fun STEM-filled opportunity:

I'm looking forward to meeting with everyone next week during parent conferences!  If you haven't confirmed your time yet, please do so as soon as possible. (Notices went out last week.)

Thank you for all you do!
Mrs. Chase

Hi Room 9 Families,

A huge thank you for all of your support for the APEX fun run!  We were one of the top classes for getting pledges.  Pledge envelopes are going home today and are due next Thursday.
