Valentine's Day

Hi Room 9 Families,

We sent home the flyer this afternoon with your child's class list and some guidelines for Valentine's Day.  Please check their agenda.

We are currently working on 'Cereal Box Biographies', habitats, making connections to your reading, subtraction with regrouping, and kickball.

It appears to be stuffy nose season, so we are rapidly running out of tissue.  If you can spare a box or two, we would greatly appreciate it!

Also, we've begun our unit on reverse engineering, so if you have extra screwdrivers laying around, we can use all shapes and sizes!

Happy Groundhog Day!

Haves and needs

Hi Room 9 Families!

We have plenty of cereal boxes for our project!  Thank you for sending them in!  We had a generous donation of tape, but we go through it quite quickly, so if you see some on sale, it would go to good use!

We've begun our new Science Topic: Habitats
Our essential questions are:
How do plants and animals adapt to change?
What effect do humans have on habitats?
We started with an exploration of our school habitat, so your child may come home and want to look under rocks and explore nooks and crannies.

We have changed the day of the math test to Thursday so that we can practice a couple of Performance Tasks before we have our test.

Reminder: Bingo Night on Wednesday - 6:30
Spirit Awards on Thursday - 1:05
No school on Friday for students.

Happy Tuesday!
Mrs. Chase

Update

Hi Room 9 Families,

We had a very interesting Design Challenge this afternoon.  We designed Never-Before-Seen carriers for their creatures and had a photographer from Art Center Pasadena document our work.

We have plenty of Happy Trash at this time, but are running very low on clear tape (like Scotch Tape).  If you have some laying around, or see some on sale, we would put it to good use!  We have re-fillable dispensers, so rolls work great!

If you are ordering from Scholastic Book Clubs, please place your order by 2:25pm tomorrow, so I can submit the order for processing.

Last, but not least, if you haven't started dinner yet, head on down to CPK with your Wilson flyer for our Fundraising event.

Thank you!
Mrs. Chase

Cereal Boxes

Hi Room 9 Families!

We are starting a project next week using cereal boxes.  If you have one or 2 available, please send them with your child.

Thank you!
Mrs. Chase

Welcome Back!

Hi Room 9 Families!

Welcome back from Winter Break!  I hope everyone had a fantastic, fun-filled two weeks!

I have a favor to ask.  Is anyone interested in taking home the Scholastic Flyers to make packets for students to take home?  It looks like there are some good book bargains in them this month.  If you are interested, please let me know via email, and I'll send them home with your child or you can stop by and pick them up.

Thank you!
Mrs. Chase

Best Part of Me Book Orders

Happy New Year Wildcat Families!

I hope you are enjoying your time off!

For those who ordered books, I received the final cost for the custom book order:
Th final cost for the books was: (including tax and delivery)
softcover $21.75
hardcover $30.75

They should arrive around mid January.

To make it easy to reimburse the incredible Mrs. Liu, who volunteered her time to create this for us, please send the exact cash amount in an envelope with your child's name and 'Best Part of Me' written on it.  If you are worried about it getting lost in the bottom of a backpack, staple the envelope to your child's agenda.

See you next Monday!!
Mrs. Chase

Book!!

Hi Room 9 Families,

Sharon Liu has put together a photo book for our class from a project we did during A Friend By My Side Week.

If you would like to order one, please let me know if you would like a soft or hard-cover.  The price listed is for 1 book.  If we order more, the price goes down dramatically.  If you could let me know by Thursday, December 22, we can get an extra 20% off. (Hard cover books will be between $25 - 30 and soft cover about $20).

Please email me with the number and type of cover you would like, and we'll let you know how much money to bring in on Friday.

Here is a link to a preview of the book.  All of Room 9 students are in the book.

Thank you!
Mrs. Chase

Request

Hi Room 9 Families!

We recently added an app to our iPads called Sock Puppets where students can create their own plays.  The only problem is that we need head phones with a microphone.  If you happen to see some on sale over the holiday break, and would like to donate them to the class, they would be greatly appreciated!

Happy Friday!

SGV Foster Families Donations

Hi Room 9 Families,

A friendly reminder that we are collecting items to give to local Foster Families.  The SGV Foster Family program coordinator said that there are a lot of babies in the program right now, so they are asking for the items such as baby wipes, diapers, and baby shampoo.  If you would like to donate to these families in need, please be sure to bring your items by December 19th.  You can even bring them to the Holiday Program on December 15th.

Thank you!
Mrs. Chase

This and That

Hi Families!

Tomorrow is VIP Lunch at 12:00.  Hope you can make it!  Also, immediately following VIP Lunch, second graders will be dancing the Turkey Trot for Spirit Awards, so please stay to watch if you can!

Please note:  I do not send homework over Thanksgiving Break to allow you time to enjoy friends and family.

Happy Thanksgiving!
Mrs. Chase

Misc.

Hi Room 9 Families!

We are fully immersed in seed dispersal.  We even planted some seeds this morning!  Thank you to Tyler and Donovan's moms for helping us out!!  If you would like to help with gardening, our garden day is Wednesday from 8:30 - 9:00.

PTA is asking for your help in donating granola bars, pretzels, or trail mix for the jogathon on Nov. 14th.

Also, we could use some scotch tape dispensers. We have rolls of tape, but only one dispenser.

Thank you for all you do!
Mrs. Chase

Garden!!!

Happy Monday!

It's official!  We had a lovely donation from the Arcangel family, and we will be receiving some edible plants this week.  Thank you Arcangel family!  This means that we will start our Wednesday morning garden volunteer opportunity.  If you have 30 - 45 minutes on Wednesday to help out, the more, the merrier!  We will start as soon as the students get settled in the am.

After this week, garden time takes only about 15 minutes, so if you are interested, just show up at 8:30 on Wednesdays (if you've checked with the Health Office for volunteer clearance).

Thank you to all of the families who donated seeds!  We haven't forgotten about you, we will be cultivating them in class before incorporating the into our raised beds.

Also, thank you to those who donated tissue and zip-top bags!

Don't forget your Red Ribbon spirit!

Classroom Supplies

Hello again!

I forgot to mention that we are low on Kleenex Tissues and could use a box of gallon sized zip top plastic bags.

Thank you!
Mrs. Chase

Menu of Change

Hi Room 9 Families!

We have started our science unit on Seed Dispersal and Pollination.  If you are out and about, and notice a seed or a pod, please bring it to class.  We are looking at how structure affects function.  We made a menu of change today and talked about the importance of understanding change as it relates to science and our world.

Also, Scholastic Orders are due Friday, if you want to order some books.  It looked like there were some really good deals in the new flyer, so I sent one home today.

We will start working on the garden on Wednesdays, so if anyone is interested in helping out, please let me know!

Happy Tuesday!
Mrs. Chase
